Civil Society Fund Winners

2010

  • Nada – Vrbovec – association for therapeutic and recreational horseback riding will train volunteers as future trainers in therapeutic horseback riding to offer needed therapy to children with special needs, as well as, promote volunteerism among the Vrbovec community youth in order to strengthen the links with the children with special needs. Volunteerism will be promoted through a community awareness raising campaign.

 

  • New Word (Novi svijet) – through their project MASLO – small advice for easier child rearing - aims to strengthen parental competences in contemporary education and child rearing with the aim of preventing child abuse within the family, a problem which has become more prominent in the Croatian society during the past decade. Some of the activities included in the project are: promotional activities, lectures for parents, lectures for teachers and experts and radio shows.

 

  • Suncokret – Center for Community Development – the goal of the activity is to enhance children’s, youth’s and women’s participation in local development by creating space for participation in the Municipality of Gvozd (area of special state concern) in order to promote mobilization of children, youth and women, increase social inclusion, provide access to information and education and improve their lives through participatory and voluntary activities.

 

  • Zvonimir - the aim of project activities is to develop a networking approach in youth violence prevention and social inclusion at local community level in the Knin area. The idea is to involve various stakeholders (youth, parents, social services, teachers and local authorities) in preventing behavior disorders of youth through awareness raising, problem resolution workshops, as well as, organizing an action group to deal with problematic youth.

 

  • Women’s Entrepreneurial Center (Ženski poduzetnički centar):- aims to assist unemployed youth in developing new behavioral patterns, attitudes and opinions which will improve their lives and motivate them to take more responsibility for their future and become more engaged in the local community, through workshops in: social entrepreneurship, developing working ethics, building self-confidence and responsibility etc.

 

  • Association of disabled students - KORAK (udruga studenata s invaliditetom KORAK)- to enable blind and visually impaired university students to participate at an equal footing in academic life and for their learning and education opportunities to reach the levels of other students. This will be done through adapting a certain volume of exam literature to the needs of the blind and visually impaired students.

 

  • Open Media Group: - ‘Let’s get to know each other’ project will give high-school students of different nationalities, namely Croats and Serbs, in Vukovar the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the two nationalities. This will be done by students working jointly on the production of a documentary film. Teams of boys and girls of both nationalities will develop and produce 4 documentary films in which they will picture a third nationality.

 

  • Field flower (Poljski cvijet): - the aim is to strengthen the capacities and skills of women and youth with disabilities in Beli Manastir in ascertaining their rights thus offering them enhanced opportunities to integrate into the community. This will be done through a series of workshops for women and youth (assertiveness and confidence building, creative workshops, introducing disabled youth to sports etc.)

 

2009
  • Environmental Association Argonauta: ‘Empowering youth for active participation in the community and promotion of social activism of youth in Sibensko-kninska County Project’ aims to empower and strengthen the capacity of the youth of the Island of Murter and the wider area to participate in local initiatives. This would be achieved through educational workshops for selected youth focusing on; the role of civil society, defining needs and priorities of the local community, project writing, etc. It is expected that the targeted group of youth will start their own youth society.

  • “SUNCE”: ‘Do you know your rights project’ is aimed at enhancing the capacity of parents of children with mental disabilities to more actively ascertain their rights and the rights of their children, thereby improving the quality of life for the family and including the children in everyday life of the local community. The project activities will include: workshops for parents enabling them to actively ascertain their rights, printing of an information leaflet for parents and monthly counseling sessions for parents of children with special needs.

  • Taekwondo club Dugo Selo: ‘Improving the health of elderly and inclusion of children with special needs into sports project’ will enable children with the Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, who due to their hyper activity cannot function in regular sports clubs, to get involved in sports activities. The project will also motivate the elderly of the town of Dugo Selo to lead more active lives by joining the club. No sports activities are available for elderly living in Dugo Selo.

  • Autonomous Center: ‘Empowering Roma councilors in cities and municipalities to effectively participate in decision making processes project’ aims to educate Roma councilors and increase their capacity and skills in fields such as: local community management, democracy and active citizenship and the new law on local self-government. The training will enable the Roma councilors to address the concerns of the Roma people more effectively and to get involved in decision making processes affecting the lives of the Roma minority.

  • Women’s Association ‘Prospective’ Ðevrske: ‘The Project empowering women in rural communities’ - aims to revitalize the rural villages in war affected areas by promoting empowering rural women, promoting employment of women and their social inclusion. Project activities will include workshops for women where they will learn some traditional crafts which will enable them to develop entrepreneurial skills and become more involved the activities of the local community.

  • Open Media Group: ‘Media campaign for affirmation and promotion of rights of women with disabilities’. Project objectives are to draw attention to women with disabilities and their role in the society and increase the awareness of the public of the problems these women are facing in everyday lives. This will be achieved through the production of an educational and promotional TV clip which will be broadcast on national television. The expected outcome of the campaign is to motivate the public to challenge the existing patterns of discrimination and to work on creating a society which will promote equal opportunities for all.

  • Croatian Youth Network: 'Strengthening mechanisms for including youth in advisory and decision making processes at local and regional levels through training and promotion of youth advisory boards.’ The project will train 120 representatives of youth councils in Croatia in advisory and decision making processes, as well as 120 employees of local and regional authorities responsible for supporting the work of youth councils at the level of towns, municipalities and counties.

  • Women’s Association Vukovar : ‘Promoting Gender Equality in Vukovar-Srijem County by Supporting Establishment of City/Municipal Commissions for Gender Equality' is focusing on gender equality mainstreaming at the local community level. The project will promote establishment of local commissions for gender equality through raising awareness, knowledge and skills related to gender equality at the local level in a way which will include all relevant stakeholders. The project will be implemented through cooperation and coordination with NGOs, local government and the County Commission for Gender Equality.

2008
  • Ecological (Environmental) society “Krka” Knin - "Green Telephone" project
    The project aims to strengthen and increase participation of the local community in resolving problems and issues related to environmental protection. Through the services of the Green telephone, the community especially young people and students will be able to report on environmentally dangerous incidents and will be able to participate in joint activities to improve the environment. ‘Krka’ will also produce educational brochures on the importance of protecting the environment.

  • “Izvor”- Spring: - Educating the community about ways of and opportunities in rural tourism project
    The project focuses on empowering and motivating the community along the river Petrinj?ica and the village of Hrvatski ?unti? to become involved in rural tourism activities through workshops. In addition, Izvor will produce brochures with information on the opportunities and possible types of activities in rural tourism.

  • Association for promotion of Equal Opportunities APEO Using data to facilitate employment of disabled persons project"
    The project aims at introducing within the Croatian Disabilities Registry the monitoring of data on hiring persons with disabilities. To ensure efficient monitoring of the implementation of the national strategy for equal opportunities for people with disabilities for 2007-2015, with a special focus on employment, a continual monitoring of employment-related parameters is needed. Reliable data on hiring persons with disabilities will be the foundation for evaluating undertaken measures and the basis for further activities of the civil society in encouraging the employment of disabled persons.

  • Cakula kroz život - "Growing up without violence and addiction project"
    Under this project the NGO will produce a twenty minute educational documentary on prevention of violence and drug addiction. The video documentary would be viewed by elementary and high-school students in Croatian schools. The aim of the project is to: educate children and young people about problems of violence, teach children and students and young people about accepting different people (children with one parent, minorities etc.), educate children and youth how to react to violence, encourage them to report violent behavior and how to avoid it, raise awareness of problems which induce violence, encourage young people to help others with problems, raise awareness about the dangers of drugs etc.

  • Croatian Debating Society: "Empowering Youth project"
    The project aims to enable young people to become acquainted first hand with how the local authorities work, how the decisions are made at the local level through their own experience, increase their knowledge, interest and motivation to become more engaged in civic activities. The project will be implemented through three activities: (i) education of young public-debaters on how the local authorities work and relate to higher levels of civic society, (ii) attending sessions of local authorities by pupil-debaters in order to monitor its work and (iii) organization of public discussions on local issues.

  • Ars Publica: "Youth empowerment workshops and mentoring for Roma and other marginalized groups in Beli Manastir for self-representation and active involvement in their communities project"
    The project aims to increase opportunities for young Roma and other marginalized youth to become actively involved and influence decisions in their community. This will be achieved through numerous workshops which will: (i) provide tools and positive experience of active involvement and self-representation in the community to the young Roma and other marginalized youth; (ii) to create a safe space for beneficiaries to discuss the issues of discrimination, individual and collective human rights; (iii) to provide opportunities for those perceived as ‘disadvantaged’ to become an active agent of positive changes in their community.

  • Labin Art Express XXI (L.A.E.): - "Youth in Local Elections 2009"
    "Youth in Local Elections 2009" will organize a series of lectures and workshops for up to 100 students (ages 16-18) in high school Mate Balzina in Labin in order to develop and improve their skills for active participation in decision making processes at a local level. In addition, L.A.E. will organize public discussions on forthcoming local elections targeting 300 students from the town of Labin and neighboring municipalities. The overall objective is to mobilize, educate and encourage active participation of young people in the area.

  • Committee for Human Rights Karlovac: - "Developing Volunteerism Project"
    The activities of the project are aimed at developing and promoting volunteerism in the Karlovac County through motivating the community especially youth, to become involved in solving problems in the community and as well as lending a voice to those who cannot speak for themselves. In addition, through distribution of educational materials and contact with the media the project will promote the idea of volunteerism as well as provide education on volunteerism.

  • HOMO – association for protection of human rights and civic liberties: - "The right to a healthy city project"
    The project is focusing on raising awareness and understanding of all citizens on environmental issues, motivating young people to change their behavior and way of life to care for and respect the environment. This will be done by establishing environmental patrols comprising of students who will carry out awareness raising activities in the town of Pula.

  • Civil Organization for Development Dalj - CODD: - "15th October - World Rural Women's Day for women from Erdut Municipality Project"
    The project aims to empower, inform and encourage rural women to take a more active part in society and play a greater leadership role in theircommunities through different activities which will coincide with the October World Rural Women’s Day campaign.

  • Luc Organization for Non-violence and Dialogue: - "Aware citizens – the force of community project"
    focuses on motivating citizens in the local community from different cultural, ethnical and religious background to become actively engaged and participate in joint community building activities, by empowering them through community skills training, promotion of volunteer work specifically linked to building skills for election monitoring in cooperation with local authorities and civil society.

  • Association of Single Parents 'Hope' – Osijek: - "Children for the children of Croatia project"
    The project will organize public consultations in cooperation with 6 other NGO’s in 4 Croatian cities here single parents, experts, representatives of local authorities will discuss the needs of single parents, possible ways of addressing those needs, raising the living standards of single parent families as well as discussing ways of improving current legislation on single parent families.

  • Women’s Center Adela: - "How to Operate the SOS Telephone Project"
    The project aims to train 15 volunteers for work on the SOS hotline for victims of domestic violence which will be able to start operating twenty four hours per day once the volunteers are fully trained, providing timely professional assistance to the users.

  • Association of Parents of Children with Special Needs – PUŽ: "You have the right to project"
    The project aims to produce and present leaflets which will empower parents of children with special needs (disabilities) through by improving their knowledge and skills on how to communicate with institutions, organizations and professionals to the benefit of their children. The Project will also encourage the professional workers to improve their communication and better address the needs of parents of children with special needs.

  • iDEMO Institute for Democracy: "Informed Roma women – employed Roma women project"
    The project aims to produce brochures ‘Informed Roma Women - Employed Roma Women’ in Croatian, Romani and Bajas which will in a simple way provide information about their rights and the functioning of the labor system in Croatia, empowering the Roma women to seek employment with more knowledge and confidence.

  • Center for Healthy Child Development - Idem i Ja: - "Idem I ja Campaign Project"
    The project aims to raise awareness of the local community about the needs of persons with special needs and their integration into society. The project will be implemented by a group of youths who will be trained to design and implement the awareness raising campaign which will also involve local authorities. The Campaign will consist of radio shows, public discussion, promotion materials and workshops.

  • NGO for provision of psychological, educational, psycho-social and pedagogical assistance ‘Igra’: - "Contact Project"
    The project aims at producing an educational brochure for youth leaving state institutions which will provide the youth with the information and skills which will enable them to live independently. Information provided in the brochure will comprise: information on basic social rights, employment, active participation in the local community, information ontolerance and civic responsibility etc.

    The project is designed to fulfill the need of youth for informal education and to promote the youth activism and to involve them in the process of development of the local community.

  • HILS - Croatian Institute for Local Government, Osijek. "Citizen participation in local governance in Eastern Slavonia project"
    The project focuses on promoting the way for citizens to address local authorities and get attention for issues relevant for the development and well-being of their communities.

  • Croatian Association for Guide Dogs Training and Mobility, Zagreb. "How to approach and communicate project"
    The project aims to inform the youth, children and broader public as to be better responsive to specific needs, rights and possibilities of disabled (blind) people in improving their social inclusion in the towns of Varaždin, Cakovec and Koprivnica.

  • MMH – Croatian Youth Network, Zagreb. "Establishing regional youth councils in central Croatia project"
    The project aims at creating Regional Youth Councils in Varaždin, Karlovac and Koprivnica-Križevci counties as independent entities which gather various youth organizations.

  • Open Academy -- Step by Step, Zagreb. "Education for social justice - anti-bias education project"
    The project targets 30 students of the Osijekbased Teachers Academy, who will through informal education gain knowledge and understanding of mechanism that create and perpetuate prejudices and stereotypes towards disadvantage groups (based on ethnic, religious, social background, or disability), as well as to develop capacity for change on personal, and future professional and institutional level.

  • KRIK - Youth NGO, Slatina. "Youth participation project"
    The project aims at mobilizing young people of Slatina town to actively participate in planning and implementation of development projects of local self-government.

  • Flight - Life Quality Improvement NGO, Zagreb. "Awareness raising on single parent families project"
    The project is on publishing the 2nd edition of the Handbook for Single Parents and Their Children and organizing consultancy meetings and round tables in 4 Croatian cities where single parents, experts, representatives of local authorities will discuss the needs of single parents and possible ways of addressing those needs.
  • Dominoes - Association for Development of Civil Society and Promotion of Women’s Rights, Split. "Let's learn more about our rights –women's rights project"
    The project aims to inform citizens, particularly women, on their rights as stipulated in Croatian Gender Equality Law and to advocate for its enforcement at all levels.

  • Center for Development of Democracy (CERD) - "The public has the right to know project"
    The project supports civic engagement and participation of public in creating local development policies. This advocacy project aims to: improve local administration in rendering their services to citizens, increase the awareness of citizens and their right to information access and their knowledge of various administrative procedures thus eliminating possible corruption.

  • Filantrop - Association for Comprehensive Human Development - Project: Publishing of Children’s Ecological Know-It-All Brochure (around 10.000 copies).
    to raise awareness of the children and youth on ecological issues as to prepare and empower them to better preserve their environment.

  • Center for Education, Counseling and Research (CESI) - "Right to equal opportunities project"
    The project promotes gender agenda and the achievement of equality between men and women in matters of human rights and social justice.

  • Croatian Union of Physically Disabled Persons Associations (HUPT) - Project: raising awareness through the children's book Bontoncic (Children's Etiquette).
    This children's book is a contribution to raising society’s awareness towards disabled persons and a contribution to developing tolerance and humaneness in the community.

  • Association of Roma Women "Better Future" - Project: collection and publishing of twenty life stories of Croatia Roma women
    The books are supposed to bring closer the life of one rather isolated group to the rest of society and to reduce the gap between the citizens.

  • Art Association - Project: design and printing of children’s mine-awareness picture book
    The project will support anti-landmine campaign and will educate children on the threats of these deadly weapons.

  • Suncokret - Center for Community Development - Community Building – Youth Empowerment
    The overall project goal is to encourage civic engagement and reintegration of people of different ethnic groups (domiciled population and Serb returnees in a post conflict area) through peace reconciliation, educational and conflict resolution skills building.

  • Sanus – Association of Parents of Children Suffering from Malignant Diseases - Project: educational seminars for parents of children suffering from malignant diseases and printing of leaflets
    This is an advocacy and social mobilization project aiming to sensitize the general public on the rights of the children suffering from cancer.

  • Novi Svijet (New World) – NGO Supporting Children and Youth - Project: CHAT – open discussions on Thursday.
    The main goal of this program is to enable an open, public and democratic conversation for young people about current society topics which they have not done in their regular education.
